Bowlful of Laughs Bill Rosen Marie Thomas 9780988977815 Books Reviews
A terrific book, but who does 's pricing. As classic as it is, one would hardly pay over $1300 for it - and a used copy as well?
I enjoyed the commodal romp through Bill's life from formative years up to and including grownup-hood. His adventures of awe and fear of the porcelain sculpture are riveting and hilarious! I never thought of the bathroom as the most important square footage in an abode, now I see it with new respect! Be prepared to go from giggles to uproarious laughter!
Bowlful of Laughs, "A Traveler's Traumatic Toilet Tales"
Treat yourself this holiday season ~ your friends, relatives, too ~ to Bowlful of Laughs, "A Traveler's Traumatic Toilet Tales," by Bill Rosen and Marie Thomas, illustrated by Al Snyder and Leann Webb (published by Alycat, 167 pages), a smart collection of 18 uproarious tales and 30 hilarious cartoons that these four talented artists have conjured up for our unique pleasure.
I found delight and great fun in trolling with Mr. Rosen's adventures in the toilet bowl. He and Ms. Thomas have joined the odd and the familiar in faux pas that we have all endured, privately, though sometimes not, at one time or another, and they've brought our tribulations out of the stench of the outhouse and into the bouquet of a spring day after an invigorating storm. They do not miss a beat in flushing out all that's fit and not so fit in appropriate smirks and inappropriate hilarity ~ It's all fair game. At humanity's expense.
There's a time-progression in these tales that I shall not explore here, except to say that his twin daughters are quite young at the beginning of these superb tales and a tad older as youthful teens at the end. Often, it's a family affair. Sometimes, things go berserk on the job. Expect nothing but horrors on vacations, camping trips, apartments in seedy neighborhoods, mobile homes, etc. Murphy's Law operates unmercifully in this world "If anything can go wrong, it will" ~ eventually. Hell breaks loose. The best laid plans of animate toilets and inanimate plumbers go awry faithfully. The fun and the demolition will be as splattered and different from one another as the toilets are diabolical and alive. If you don't laugh, you're doomed to sit, constipated for an eternity. These things just happen to Mr. Rosen. It's not like he's ducking low beneath a cloud of dung and doom.
I do not wish to summarize the tales. Why? Simply, I could not do them justice. As I think about them, I'd rather dip into the bowl and pluck one out ~ than write about it. I'd rather you did so, too. You won't be disappointed. You'll roar and squat with a too-full belly. Laugh and wince at unspeakable noises and damnable sights. Smile and wrinkle up your nose at foul emanations. The tales will sneak up on you in stealth and burst upon your sensibilities with the explosive force of an unnatural evacuation that you cannot stop or ignore ~ That Nature cannot ignore, either. The mechanical devils ~ the toilets ~ take on a life of their own. They become living things with personalities. They're half the show. The authors and the illustrators have drawn images of the infinite realm of diabolical disasters and crude complications that flash to mind and will stay fixed there for years to come. You won't forget them. That's how smart and indescribably funny these tales are.
Told with an abundance of wit and a highly-seasoned sprinkle of sophisticated taste, these 18 sometimes ribald, but always expertly told tales, that range in length from 5 to 10 pages, thus making them accessible to "the Gentle Reader" in a single productive sit, will nonetheless offend absolutely no one. They may and, perhaps, should ~ to elicit their greatest effect ~ be read, shared, and indeed enjoyed by young and old alike, yes! in mixed company, too, no less, while they yet document the vices, follies, and foibles of mankind, while addressing the details of our nether world of unspeakable nasty innards. Mr. Rosen is a satirist at heart. He and Ms. Thomas yet abound in a skill in writing that in these ingenious tales has joined taste, humor, class, intelligence, and yes! a wisdom that is both comic and rare, delightful and unusual, with a perspective that raises the Art of the Informal Essay for our time to a depth that can only be described as execrable.
I found fun and absurdity on every page. Hated that the stories had come to an end. Hoped that the authors had a topic as outrageously funny as this for an encore. They've done a great job.
Bowlful of Laughs is a work of simple and simple-minded fun and pure genius. In concept and in execution, it achieves a rare and a high order of excellence in informal literary achievement. I'm thinking of the 18th century and of the first informal essays in English, The Tattler and The Spectator, written by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele. It's that good. Mr. Rosen and Ms. Thomas are that good.
Their Bowlful of Laughs ranks down there with the best.

I wanted a gift book and this is a collection of toilet adventures by a young father - starting with recalling his own early potty experiences with lobsters under his bed, right on to his myriad of funny adventures buying toilet plungers, living in apartment houses with eccentric neighbors, chefs and 'Bathtub Bob', and 'the Water Nazi' in California, and the toilet that eats everything in sight and scares his own toddler! And the hardback is beautiful-with a smooth, almost silky cover that the bookstore cashier joked with me was 'waterproof' if you 'drop it in'. That started me laughing and then reading it was hilarious skunks in the outhouse, proper bathroom behavior at a wedding, and the classic, a Pate Swan whose head fell off! After getting thunderous thanks for the first gift copy, I ended up buying extra copies for other gift occasions - and one for my guest bathroom! It's well written, a challenging vocabulary, and gets better with each story. 18 all together, just a few pages each-with exceptional color frames between. This is an all-purpose funny- for adults and children alike-has lessons on potty training, apartment hunting, and vacation rental do's and don'ts. I absolutely love this book!
I enjoyed Bill's style of writing, easy to read, enjoyable. His experiences are great. Very funny for all ages. I highly recommend this book for everyone
If you're looking for an interesting take on an explanation of how the world functions through the eyes of a toilet then you've come to the right place. An easy to read, funny, and hard to put to down book, Bill Rosen and Marie Thomas tell personal stories that relate to all. Not recommended for the serious-man.
Sometimes you just need to get away from the world and have a good, out loud laugh. So head for your favorite rest room retreat with your own copy of "Bowlful". You will be glad you did. I bought two, one for me and one for my guest bathroom. Thank you Bill and Marie for helping me to keep a proper balance to my nonfiction bookshelf of favorites!
